If it takes ten men working together ten hours to dig a ten foot by ten foot by ten foot hole, how long will it take one man working on his own to fall it it and knacker his ankle? A few seconds, it seems—but that’s like only counting the last spadeful of earth. It took years to get me this distracted and unobservant and clumsy. An expert can do things in moments that would take a novice days. And it takes real expertise to miss a ten foot by ten foot by ten foot hole. Anyway, I’ve got some time to think about it. How long will it take one man working on his own to climb out?
