Day one in the new job. I see my old boss sat behind the new boss’s desk. No sign of the thoughtful and charming woman who interviewed me. The company has taken over all the contracts I was most looking forward to being rid of. My chair squeaks when I sit back, announcing to the office that I am lazing, just like my old one did. In the afternoon meeting, my new old boss puts a photo of Anita on the projector. Anita, who I used to sit next to, who I shared snacks and stories and paracetamol with, the one person I was sad to leave behind. This is our competitor, he says, scratching at her eyes with the laser pointer, and we are going to crush her.
