For fourteen years, my father has been trying to sell his game show concept, Pardon the Dogshit. He will not tell you what Pardon the Dogshit involves. He will not listen to any suggestions about a change in title. He has pitched it to TV and radio, and for a time he intended to stage it independently at the Edinburgh Fringe. My father is a wonderful man, kind and loving, respected in his day-job and active in the community. But Pardon the Dogshit will be his legacy, he says. It was going to pay for my house. Now it will pay for my children’s houses. And when he finally sells it, he won’t let them put his name on it, because he doesn’t want us to live his shadow.
