With careful saving, close attention to dropped change, and a little light theft, Sally had accumulated one thousand four hundred and twenty-two pence, along with a little foreign currency she hadn’t much use for. She kept it in an old ice cream tub under her bed. Every few days she counted it, and most times she got the same number. But today, when she slid the tub out she could feel that it was too light. She would get a little broken toy from the charity shop in exchange, and that would be the end of it. She put the tub back, pretending it was heavy. She didn’t want to count it.
