Donald lost his leg at the knee by trying to peel a hard-boiled egg while driving. It was a stupid thing to do, but he had done it a hundred times before without incident. He would knock them on the steering wheel until the shell was well shattered, and then slide the skin off one-handed with his thumb. So it wasn’t the egg that betrayed him so much as the complacency. When they came to cut him out they found him nibbling at the yolk. For the shock, he said. Now he drives an automatic, and peels his eggs before he sets off, and tries not to think of the other driver, who eats hers through a tube.
