The snake was getting restless. She had been a gentle thing, to begin with, but she did not like her new keeper. She got scrawny rats these days, and was brought out only to frighten people. And frighten them she did, though she was gentle. Her keeper’s eyes and voice made sure of that. But she could be gentle with him, too. Gentle as venom.
