They set the warm black stone into the floor when they built their house. It was not enough to keep the place truly warm: they still lit fires in the winter. But they were never truly cold, either. When they had no wood for a fire, they made their bed above the stone, or put the frozen water-jars there to thaw. It was like having some great animal’s body to heat them. But it had teeth they could not see.
