She encased the bee that killed him in resin and wore it round her neck. Neither of them had known about the allergy. It was as though that bee had been made for him, destined for him. She supposed all deaths were like that: you survived everything else. The creature changed in strange ways, even sealed up as it was. It darkened and turned more translucent. She imagined that one day it would slip out and fly away, and then she would feel safe without it at her heart. She told people she wore it to mourn him, and they believed her.
