But for the stone in her shoe, she would have made her train. She ran on it knowing that it would take too long to stop and tip it out. As long as she didn’t mind the pain, she could run fast enough. She felt her foot start to slip as her heel turned bloody. Beneath it, the stone shifted, until it was at the ball of her foot, right under the bone. She landed hard on it, and the shock took her down. It was a little thing, no larger than a teardrop. Her other foot was fine.
